“What is minimalism and why is everyone so obsessed with it?!”
Here’s the answer: Minimalism is a way of living life that helps you to achieve more freedom. These days people tend to be very materialistic (speaking from experience) and unfortunately put too much value to the things they have. Having minimalism in your life means having freedom from worry, guilt and overwhelm in many aspects of your life. Minimalism isn’t about getting rid of all your possessions, it just means that material things will have less of a priority in your life.
As someone who shops often, getting into a minimalist lifestyle was very difficult. Over the span of a week I was constantly in my room getting rid of a ton of old things that I didn’t need anymore. At times it wasn’t easy because I got rid of things that I had held onto for a very long time, but after I finished a big weight was lifted off my chest. I felt a sense of freedom and relief like never before.
The reason why this change was so significant was because I realized that a lot of the things that I had held onto didn’t make me feel happy anymore. Once I learned that, the rest of the process was easy.
I felt a significant difference just days after I had gotten rid of my stuff. My room was much neater and I only had things that were important to me. I found myself to be much happier and more content with the things I had.
Every day I have changed for the better because of this new way of living my life.
Because of this change I’ve noticed that I shop less often. Before I used to spend every paycheck on clothes and food, but now I take time to save my money and keep my goals in mind. Shopping every week did not benefit me in any way. All it did was give me more clutter and more clothes to put away when I was done using them. Fashion minimalism has definitely helped me to make better decisions about how I spend my money and it’s helped me to have more appreciation for the simple things in life.
Here are some reasons why you should consider living more minimalist:
You will have more space in your closet.
Everybody likes to have more room in their closet. When it’s neat and organized it makes it easier to take things out, and put things back. It also makes it easier to recreate different outfits and remember what you wore.
You will feel relaxed and satisfied.
Don’t you just hate that feeling of stress and overwhelm from looking at those piles of clothes all over your room? You have a closet full of old clothes and at the bottom you have old shoes and purses that you’ve kept just incase you might need them one day? Just imagine that feeling being gone.
You will have more time and money.
The point of minimalism is simplifying your life and letting go of things that don’t matter. When you feel less of a need to shop it gives you more time to enjoy what you have and make less shopping decisions. And when it’s time to shop you will be more likely to buy stuff you actually need instead of stuff you don’t.
These are 5 ways to be more minimalist in your closet:
1. Remove clutter from your closet.
Take some time to go into your closet and take a look at what you have. You may end up noticing that you don’t wear half of the things in there! That’s your cue to let it go. Of course you don’t have to get rid of everything in your closet just the things that you know you haven’t worn in a very long time. The best way to get rid of them is to sell or donate them, especially if you know that they can still be worn again. You’ll be glad to see a nice and clean closet next time you go to pick out some clothes for the day.
2. Repurpose your clothing
There’s a ton of ways that you can repurpose the clothing that you have. One way that you can repurpose a long sleeved shirt is by cutting it up and giving it a new look. You could turn it into a tank top, a crop top or even a skirt! While these options may not be ideal if you don’t have the time, this is a great way to turn something old into something new.
3. Simplify your wardrobe.
Try creating a capsule wardrobe which includes timeless pieces that will never go out of style. This will make it easier to pick out clothes to wear, and it will keep your closet more organized. Capsule wardrobes are filled with clothes that can be mixed and matched, so you won’t have to worry about repeat outfits too often.
4. Think before you shop.
It’s easy to go in the store and quickly get hooked on all of the items that you could use for this and that reason, but part of living a minimalist lifestyle means cutting the shopping habits you had before. You don’t have to say no to every item you see but think about whether it is a need or a want.
5. Practice gratitude.
Ultimately it comes down to being grateful for the things that you have, and not taking things for granted. If you take time at the end of every day to journal or even think about a few things you are grateful for in your life, it goes a long way.
